Vice President, Technology, Data, and Product

The Vice President of Technology, Data, and Product is responsible for the organization’s technology and product strategy and its implementation, ensuring that the transformational potential of “digital” is brought to bear on the National Board’s goals and work. The VP’s leadership extends to all aspects of the National Board’s technology systems, data, and field-facing products. This role is multifaceted in leading the development, streamlining, and maintenance of internal and external data and information systems that support leadership, staff, and stakeholders; in leading the development, improvement, and market growth of key products, including supporting systems; and in leading in defining and supporting best practices and success in project management and vendor management. The VP will be an effective change agent, deploying, modeling, and advocating for data-informed decision making and driving prioritized progress on projects across the technology and product portfolio.
The right candidate for this role will have a demonstrated ability to create opportunities to better serve internal and external constituents through data, technology, product development and management, process improvement, and best practices. The impact of the VP’s leadership will facilitate increased cross functional collaboration, expanded system integration and improvement efforts, improved efficiency - internal operating structures and with external vendor partners, and deepen stakeholder engagement. The VP will lead and manage the team toward high collaboration and performance with an outcomes oriented approach. In addition, the VP will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, shaping and supporting strategic, financial, cultural, and organizational priorities and success. The VP reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership
- Provide strategic vision and direction and guide implementation on the National Board’s technology, data, and product strategy
- Develop a comprehensive knowledge of current National Board data, technologies, products, and systems while also understanding internal and external needs
- Build a future state design, with strategic systems plans and roadmaps
- Manage the technology and product portfolio including setting priorities and allocating resources
- Provide technology, data, and product leadership across the National Board, leveraging best practices in project management, process improvement, and systems thinking
- Data and tools: systems supporting staff and stakeholders integrated with a SalesForce-based data and contact management system
- Lead the operation, development, and usage of the National Board’s Salesforce-based information and customer relationship management system, which serves needs across the organization and with key partners in the field
- Responsible for other data systems and integrations utilized by staff and stakeholders in the field, such as: Hubspot e-marketing platform; SurveyMonkey survey tool; Tableau data analytics tool; and others
- IT systems: tools that create efficiencies in our communications (telephony, web access, video conferencing), internal servers and networking, cloud-based services, and security
- Lead oversight of the operation and ongoing improvement of IT hardware and software supports to meet organizational and staff needs
- Conduct regular IT system audits with a focus on meeting needs and financial efficiencies
- ATLAS and other external facing products: develop, improve, and strengthen field engagement for key NB products
- Lead the operation, development, and integration of ATLAS, the National Board’s video-based case library of accomplished teaching, into the work of the National Board
- Collaborate with other external partners and systems to enhance the candidate experience, especially in access to third party funding, and drive YoY candidate growth
- Operational management of Board certification: Lead vendor management of operational partner, improving efficiency and effectiveness of cross-functional and cross-organizational operational work
- Develop and collaborate on long-term plans for improved effectiveness in operational support of Board certification
- Oversee and support day to day relationship management, serving as escalation pathway and thought partner to internal staff
- Data and tools: systems supporting staff and stakeholders integrated with a SalesForce-based data and contact management system
- Lead in developing and using a feedback loop with stakeholders to identify and meet strategic needs:
- Proactively build relationships with National Board staff, stakeholders, and constituents and engage them throughout design, development, and deployment of prioritized projects
- Lead the creation of proposals or needs requirements for new services and tools, the development phase of new services or processes, the creation of operational policies and procedures, and the development and implementation of staff or other user training
- Monitor, analyze, and evaluate the performance of new technologies, products, systems, and processes against goals and needs, proactively identifying areas for improvement
- Provide strategic vision and direction and guide implementation on the National Board’s technology, data, and product strategy
- Team Leadership
- Supervise and manage a diverse staff with multiple direct reports and leadership responsibility for additional indirect staff
- Support individual staff engagement, performance, development, and advancement
- Build a strong collaborative culture within the team of direct reports and with other teams across the organization
- Develop and oversee the department’s budget, ongoing strategic allocation of funds, and tracking budget to actuals

- Participate and lead on the organization’s senior leadership team
- Influence and actively support a strong and intentional organizational culture
- Inform and co-determine strategic, financial, cultural, and people development priorities
- Contribute to building a collaborative and high-performing senior leadership team
Summary of Experience:
- Advanced degree in business, computer science, information systems and infrastructure, information security, or similar field required
- 10+ years of experience, with multiple years of experience leading user-centric design and technology for similar organizations with a national reach and impact
- Knowledge of the K-12 education industry and of the teaching profession preferred
- Experience in non-profits preferred
- Proven track record of success in the design, development, and deployment of new technologies and related services and processes to meet evolving programmatic needs, including feasibility, operational analysis, and implementation and integration required
- 5+ years management and staff development experience required
- 5+ years of progressive budget responsibility required

- An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved, underrepresented, and marginalized communities
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage in different communication styles as appropriate, produce well-written materials based on purpose and audience, revise and edit materials written by others, and represent the National Board among leaders of partner organizations
- Proven ability to cultivate collaboration, inclusivity, conflict resolution, and productivity in and across groups throughout exploratory and decision-making discussions

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

- Work performed remotely and/or at the National Board’s offices. Some travel may occasionally be required, and travel sites vary in comfort.

- The National Board's office is located in Arlington, VA, however, the National Board staff operates in a virtual first office policy in response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and impact on our lives.
