9th Grade STEM Teacher

In Fall 2016, Miriam Foundation will expand its education services to open an independent high school in the St. Louis area that specifically serves students with learning disabilities. Miriam Academy will build on the K-8 model of Miriam School to provide project-based, personalized learning, and to support self-advocacy for students with learning differences, including diagnosed learning disabilities ADHD, and social challenges. Graduates of Miriam Academy will be prepared for post-secondary studies or career exploration. In 2016-17, Miriam Academy expects to serve 10 students in 9th grade and will ultimately expand to serve 100 students in grades 9-12.
STEM Teacher Overview:
The STEM Teacher at Miriam Academy is an experienced secondary teacher who is passionate about project-based learning, personalized learning, and self-advocacy. The STEM Teacher champions collaborative work environment in the classroom and with their colleagues. The STEM Teacher coordinates instructional supports for their students with the Miriam Academy faculty and staff. The STEM Teacher reports to the Head of School.
Responsibilities:
Instructional Practice:
• Write and deliver project-based learning units aligned to the Miriam Academy Curriculum Guide
• Design formative and summative assessments that allow students to demonstrate knowledge in a variety of modes
• Collaborate closely with Special Education Teacher to insure objectives in IEPs and student learning plans are met
• Coordinate with subject-specialty teachers, therapists, and other support staff to support cross-disciplinary projects
• Embed opportunities for choice, advocacy, and agency in daily experiences
Community Engagement:
• Inspire collaborative community among students and faculty
• Maintain open-door, welcoming parent partnership
• Work closely with community partners to support external experiences for students
• Support enrollment and admissions events as needed
Qualifications:
• Successful candidates will possess:
o A MA in Education, with a certification or concentration in learning disabilities
o Content-area expertise and related certification in secondary English, History, Math, or Science
o 5 years teaching experience in secondary education
o Excellent written and oral communication skills
o Proficiency with computer use for curating student resources, assessments, and data tracking
o Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while paying close attention to detail

Founded in 1910, Miriam: The Learning Disability Experts is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in Webster Groves, MO, that is committed to improving the quality of life for children with learning disabilities and their families through two innovative programs: Miriam School, Miriam Learning Center, and soon Miriam Academy. Miriam serves nearly 1,000 children, ages 3-18, in the St. Louis region who struggle with learning disabilities. The Miriam Scholarship Campaign annually provides $1 million in financial assistance to Miriam students and families.
