Reporting to the Director of Technology, the Network Systems Specialist will provide timely, considerate computer support to The School's faculty, staff and students, and to support the technical aspects and systems that compose the technology initiatives of the school. Monitors, administers and maintains servers' software and hardware. Is in charge of hard and cloud backup of systems, and disaster recovery initiatives. Support hardware, software, and back office operations of The School. Provides timely and purposeful access to school's systems through managing users and passwords. Serves as technical liaison to Columbia University Information Technology Department (CUIT). Serves as point-person for purchasing. Is an integral part of the Student Information Systems and websites management team. The central goal remains to build professional relationships with faculty, students , parents , administrative staff and colleagues within the technology department to assure that the school's end user experience, as well as its network infrastructure, are capable of fulfilling the mission and goals of The School at Columbia. While the role is focused on Servers and Systems the Specialist will, from time to time, work on special projects, and also will be involved with planning and delivering technology-driven professional development to larger groups, cadres or teams of faculty and administrative staff throughout the year, including summer sessions.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains server systems availability to users through daily monitoring; provides technical guidance and operational support to users in implementation and use of software applications; researches, evaluates, and recommends hardware/software solutions to ensure effective systems operations; develops specifications for systems modifications, corrections and testing of systems prior to implementation; coordinates the installation of systems. Supervises system and database administration including backup and restore procedures; analyzes and corrects database growth and performance issues; develops, implements, and monitors the system security encompassing operating systems security, file system security, and applications security to ensure data integrity in operations. Serves as technical liaison with outside consultants and the Universities network support group (40%)
Supports the Application Desktop Support team in Imaging client machines, providing training to new users as well as follow-up training and assistance; confers with the Educational Technologists and users regarding current and prospective software changes and future needs; serves as technical liaison with outside consultants and the applications support and network and technical services units. (20%)
In conjunction with school staff, faculty and administrators, and outside consultants, helps with the operation of the school management systems and websites. Requires frequent exercise of discretionary judgment and specialized knowledge in interpreting and applying policies; situations are varied and sometimes highly complex.(20%)
Supports other school departments, staff, faculty and administrators with the management of software and hardware related to specialized functions. (10%)
Determines necessary documentation and specifications; recommends additional standards, procedures, and methods. (5%)
Provides support with troubleshooting and resolving software and hardware technical problems. Supports with other projects/tasks as needed. (5%)  

Bachelor's degree in a technology related field or its equivalent required. 3 years related experience required. Job-related data center management with demonstrated competence in systems administration and relational database administration. Knowledge of Google Apps for Education. Knowledge of Mac OS X server and Windows server systems, networking, and relational databases; ability to analyze, implement, and maintain complex system applications; ability to remain current with technology and Its advances; ability to write technical and end-user documentation, read, interpret, and apply complex concepts from technical publications and manuals; advanced skill in communicating both orally and in writing, with large and small audiences; skill in collecting and assembling data, preparing reports, monitoring progress and analyzing data; ability to administer programs. End user support experience in an educational setting preferred.  
Ability to support faculty for integrating technology into the classroom. Commitment to excellence in teaching and the education of children. Appreciates value of a strong team and applies team building skills. Excellent verbal and oral communications, listening, and interpersonal skills. Appreciation of and advocacy for diversity within an urban school setting.
Ability to lift and carry loads of (40+ lbs)  
 
Master's degree. Mac OS and Mac OS Server Certifications. Windows Server and Windows SQL Server Certifications. Knowledge of Drupal. GAFE Certification.
