The Evergreen School, an independent Preschool –Grade 8 school serving highly capable students is currently accepting applications for an Upper Division Math and Technology Teacher (grades 6-8).
 
The Organization
The Evergreen school is located in Shoreline, Washington approximately half a mile north of the city of Seattle.  It is fully accredited by NWAIS (Northwest Association of Independent Schools).  Founded in 1963 to provide a nurturing environment for children with extraordinary minds, Evergreen has grown from an enrollment of 6 in 1963 to a current enrollment of 452 students.  The campus facilities have also grown in recent years with the opening of a new gym and theatre in 2000 and the opening of two new academic and administrative buildings in the fall of 2015.  The school celebrated its fiftieth birthday in the 2013-2014 school year, and is currently engaged in a campaign for the building project and endowment.  Today, in the words of Evergreen’s mission statement:  We inspire and empower highly capable, creative learners to lead with curiosity, compassion and courage in an ever evolving global community.
 
The Opportunity
The upper division math and technology teacher is responsible for teaching a variety of math and technology classes in grades 6-8, including general math, pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II and geometry using a wide range of instructional tools and resources. The successful candidate will have a collaborative approach to teaching an engaging and challenging program to highly capable students with individual learning styles and needs.
 
This is a salaried, benefits-eligible, full-time 1.0 FTE position for the 2016-2017 school year beginning August 24, 2016.
 
Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement math curriculum and activities for students at varying levels of progress from grades 6 through 8. This includes creating schemes of work and lesson plans, identifying and selecting instructional resources and methods to meet students’ needs, preparing the classroom for activities and writing end-of-term narrative evaluation reports
  • Teach grade 6 technology that includes Lego Mindstorm EV3 robotics, digital music composition and arrangement, digital photography and movie making, and some experience coding in any language would be helpful
  • Supervise after school Math Club, which includes limited weekend events
  • Regularly assess students’ progress by observing and evaluating performance and development, assigning and grading classwork, homework, tests and assignments and providing appropriate feedback to students, their parents and colleagues
  • Consistently communicate and document clear objectives for all learning activities to maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development in compliance with laws, school policies and independent school regulations and accreditation standards
  • Establish and enforce school rules for students with a positive style and strong classroom management skills
  • Attend school, department, team and parent meetings
  • Participate in certain extra-curricular events, such as social and sporting activities, admission events, clubs, overnight camps and student group activities
  • Maintain knowledge of and competency in relevant classroom technology, as well as passion for recent developments in teaching resources and methods with the flexibility to incorporate changes into instructional plans and activities.
  • Be strictly vigilant about student health and safety

Experience, Education and Desirable Qualities
Experience
  • 2-3 years in a lead teacher role
  • Background in independent schools, preferably working with highly capable/gifted children
 
Education
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with teaching credentials, preferably in math education
  • A master’s degree is preferred
  • WA State teaching certificate is preferred

  • Able to communicate clearly, effectively and comfortably with the independent school community including students, parents and colleagues both inside and outside the classroom
  • Comfortable utilizing education technology applications in the classroom
  • Respectfully maintain a high degree of confidentiality and integrity while exhibiting a professional manner and building constructive working relationships
  • Possess a high degree of cultural competency and demonstrated success in working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Can report to work at the scheduled time and seldom be absent from work
  • Completes work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner, conscientious about assignments and deadlines
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite and Gmail
  • Able to lift up to 35 pounds

Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s background and experience and will be competitive with similar positions in Seattle area independent schools.
