Managing Director of Technology
The mission of Success Academy is to reimagine public education by creating and operating exceptional, world-class public schools and leading the fight for parent choice and education equality nationally. From the classroom to the halls of government, this means finding profoundly different approaches to how we structure, implement and support schooling. To fulfill our mission, we reconceive every aspect of school design, from writing rigorous new curricula to drawing regularly on the advances in technology, business and social/civic practices that are transforming every sector except education.Over the past decade, Success Academy has grown faster than any charter network in the nation, building a vibrant network of 42 elementary, middle and high schools. Our ~14,000 children – mostly poor and minority – are out-performing students at top city and suburban schools across New York State. With our oldest students in 11th grade, we are fast approaching the irrefutable proof point that zip code does not determine destiny. Within the next decade, we plan to grow to 100 schools, with the goal of educating 50,000 children across New York City in a uniquely holistic pre-k-12 system. At 100 schools, we will be graduating 3,000 scholars each year who are prepared to enter, persist and graduate from college and eventually to lead in business, government and civic realms.Success Academy has taken a radically different approach based on the belief that great schools are the result of rigorous and joyous learning, robust training and development, data-driven management, and strong leadership. With its disruptive model, Success Academy is fundamentally changing the educational landscape. Despite the booming EdTech industry, today’s educational technology landscape falls short in supporting this disruptive model. Success Academy has the opportunity to be on the forefront of accelerating EdTech innovation - reshaping the teaching and learning experience with technology.To seize this opportunity, Success Academy seeks to hire a Managing Director of Technology to lead an innovative technology agenda that provides the requisite infrastructure, services and applications to fulfill its mission. The Managing Director of Technology will report to Chief Scaling Officer, LaMae de Jongh, and will work closely with our founder and CEO, Eva Moskowitz, and senior management in :● Establishing a shared technology vision that advances Success Academy’s mission;● Developing and implementing a technology roadmap that rationalizes the existing technology ecosystem; and specifies the foundational architecture and technology solutions that are needed and the scope and sequence of required technology developments, enhancements and/or decommissioning of existing solutions;● Building out and leading a high performing technology organization with requisite skills and capacity, and enabled by scalable development and operations processes to sustainably support Success Academy’s rapid growth; and● Partnering across the organization to drive technology-enabled innovations within the classroom, the school and the network. The Managing Director of Technology should be someone who…● Is a strategic thinker;● Effectively leads and manages people, and has experience in leading multiple teams using both agile and traditional project management methodologies. ● Has a strong engineering discipline and applies practical knowledge to build better software● Has experience and expertise in gathering stakeholder requirements; architecting, developing and maintaining scalable education technology platforms; integrating packaged solutions; and vendor management;● Is knowledgeable of Success Academy’s stack of technology which includes, but it is not limited to, Linux, Python, AWS, PostgreSQL and Git● Has experience with one or more of Kanban, Kaizen, or the Scaled Agile Framework● Effectively communicates with, and translates between technical and non-technical stakeholders;● Stays apace of technology trends and the landscape of education technologies and tools, and strategically considers how they can be leveraged to advance the organization ● Seeks to work at a fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative organization that is committed to education reform.As a fast growing, data-driven organization, Success Academy understands the essentials of a high performing technology capability, which features well defined technology development and operations models and practices that drive predictable delivery; software-as-a-service and cloud-based computing solutions for efficiency and scalability; and a secure platform built for agility, integration ease and collaboration.
