About the Position:

Information technology is fundamental to Sheridan’s success -- shaping its operation, culture and emphasis on creativity and innovation. The role of Associate Vice President (AVP), Information Technology is to provide vision and leadership for an innovative, effective, and secure IT environment that supports Sheridan’s vision, academic and administrative objectives. 

 

The AVP champions strategic delivery, and system performance in IT while fostering a culture of process innovation and strong service orientation for all user communities. The AVP leads the corporate level IT planning, policies and IT management processes.  

 

The AVP provides senior level oversight, leadership and guidance to the following departments in the portfolio:

  • Enterprise System Services
  • Information & Communication Technology
  • IT Services
  • Information & Security Compliance
  •  IT Finance & Business Operations
  • IT Project Management Office (PMO)

 

The central IT function includes: the institution’s server, network and telecommunications infrastructure, administrative and academic systems, application development and procurement, IT support services and other central IT services such as e-mail.

 

 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • As  a member of Sheridan’s senior leadership (President’s Executive Council), supporting and adding value to Sheridan’s long range planning; Participating in a wide range of strategic and operational decisions, affecting the current and future direction and effectiveness of Sheridan
  • Working closely with Sheridan leadership and the Sheridan community to shape and implement information technology investments, plans and strategies aligned with institutional goals and client needs
  • Developing and implements Sheridan-wide IT governance and communication processes
  • Identifying long-term Sheridan-wide information technology needs; developing corporate level strategic plans to meet those needs; and developing policies for ensuring the ongoing effectiveness and security of the IT operations
  • Developing  and executing strategic and operational  plans
  • Providing leadership and guidance of portfolio leaders to ensure accountability of the overall portfolio of resources and budgets by leaders to deliver on programs and projects
  • Maintaining a high level of staff performance  and building professional capacity through effective recruiting, selection, mentoring/coaching, workflow/project planning, employee development and performance management
  • Fostering a safe, respectful, supportive workplace
  • Developing long-range financial plans for acquisition, maintenance and renewal of info technology
  • Negotiating corporate level IT contracts and developing and maintaining partnerships with key technology vendors and other groups
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures, accountability for the efficient and compliant management of Records and Information assets, as well as the safeguarding of personal and confidential information
  • Maintaining current knowledge in field of expertise to advance services and guidance provided by portfolio
  • Other responsibilities and special projects as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • 4 year bachelor’s degree in computer science, business administration, IT engineering or a related field along with a minimum of 12 years of progressive senior leadership experience in information technology, preferably in a higher education institution (or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience)
  • Eligibility for membership in professional associations related to information technology such as the Canadian Information Processing Society is preferred
  • Broad and  in-depth knowledge of current and emerging information technologies and best practices related to organizational academic and administrative objectives
  • Track record for successfully leading complex, mid to large scale technological projects
  • Ability to motivate, lead, develop and manage an agile and creative IT team
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, including in an educational environment
  • Sound understanding of educational teaching/learning processes and relevant technology
  • Creative and complex problem solving skills in addition to the ability to research, analyze and synthesis information
  • Sound negotiation, mediation & change management skills along with an ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Strategic and visionary leadership style with  strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • High degree of professionalism and emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high volume of work with competing priorities and time constraints
  • Desire for life-long learning; current with technology trends
