As a Shop Manager at The Nueva school, you maintain the shop culture and shop space to ensure that it remains a productive and healthy learning environment.  Do you love to tinker and build? We're looking for someone with a similar mindset (and a lot more years of training) to help assist and guide our gifted high school students. Engineers are especially invited to apply.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work with 9th - 12th graders on individual or small group projects.
  • Support design and engineering classes in a 9th-12th grades.
  • Creating a welcoming, safe, and inclusive student culture in the shop.
  • Collaborate effectively with the I-Lab Faculty and Administration.
  • Maintain/arrange for service of all tools and equipment.
  • Enforce all shop safety rules.
  • Assist/Mentor with after-school programs, potentially including: First Robotics and MIT InvenTeams.
  • Current shop tools include:
    • Wood shop: bandsaw, scroll saw, drill press, panel saw,CNC router, stationary disc/belt sander, miter saw, spindle sander, misc. portable power tools and hand tools.
    • Metal shop: Tormach CNC Mill, bandsaw, manual mill, drill press, MIG welding, TIG welding, portable power tools and hand tools.
    • Digital Fabrication: laser cutter, 3D printers, other mill, carvey, soldering irons.
    • Textiles: sewing machine.
    • Electronics: function generators, power supplies, oscilloscopes, misc. test equipment.
  • Identify, organize, and maintain a stock of commonly used shop materials.
  • Create and maintain systems to keep the shop clean and organized.

Position Qualifications:

  • Has B.S. or higher in engineering or a comparable degree or equivalent experience
  • Hardworking, organized, and reliable with a steadfast focus on safety.
  • Passionate about broadening the skills and confidence of our students in the tech arena .
  • Demonstrates an interest in Design Thinking, if not expertise.
  • Can relate to and connect with gifted students.
  • Expertise in design, engineering, and making across multiple fabrication domains.
  • Loves to collaborate with an enthusiastic community of Design Thinkers, Designers, and Makers.
  • Has teaching, coaching, or educational experience (not required, but a plus).
  • Can guide a student from their initial idea to completion, while leaving locus of control in the student's hands.
  • Technologically savvy and can navigate (or learn to navigate) complex technological processes.
  • Has years of experience and confidence with multiple design and fabrication processes, including the aforementioned tools and:
    • CAD software, CAM software
  • Simple programming (i.e. Arduino, Scratch)
  • Electronics (simple DC circuits, breadboarding, Arduino sensors and motors, etc.)
  • Robotics and/or mechatronics
  • Learns new technologies as they emerge, and is excited to make recommendations for new purchases to keep the I-Lab cutting edge.
  • Has a 'fix-it' mentality and can find solutions to most shop problems.
