JOB PURPOSE:

 

The Senior Systems Administrator is a member of the Digital Library Systems & Services (DLSS) systems team ("Systeam"). The incumbent will primarily focus on supporting and upgrading our existing TSM and NetApp environments, and implementing new backup, storage and cloud-based solutions for the Libraries.

This position will perform difficult or complex programming and integration work that span knowledge domains. This work may include writing puppet manifests, designing and integrating new backup and storage technologies into existing workflows, and working with Stanford infrastructure tools such as remctl, webauth and Shibboleth.

The Senior Systems Administrator reports to the Technology Infrastructure Manager, DLSS. 

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Design, configure, implement, and maintain existing and future backup and storage systems.
  • Support developers in an Agile software development environment, including responding to help requests filed via JIRA and modeling development best practices.
  • Resolve system emergencies with significant impact on the integrity of user data and systems, including participation in the on-call rotation.
  • Establish software/hardware standards and systems policies and procedures.
  • Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to backup, storage and cloud-based initiatives.
  • Conceptualize and implement systems within broad technical or structural frameworks.
  • Perform capacity planning for system configuration, software services, network services, load distribution, and service interrelationships among computer systems.
  • Act as a technical expert or lead for local computer system administration.
  • Act as project leader on large-scale computing projects in which strong technical, directional, and personal leadership is necessary; assign and oversee the work of other system administrators as needed.
  • Manage vendor relationships and cost effective hardware and software maintenance agreements with vendors.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Relevant experience may include:

  • Experience administering systems using Puppet.
  • Experience managing backups using Tivoli Storage Manager.
  • Experience managing NetApp storage arrays.
  • Experience with Shibboleth IdP.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with complex multi-system platforms and vendors.
  • Experience coordinating multi-system and computing environments in independent computing facilities.
  • Experience developing/implementing a business continuation and disaster recovery plan.
  • Proven ability to develop appropriate plans to meet computing needs.
  • Expert ability to program in multiple programming languages in multiple operating systems.
  • Proven ability to lead and work on large/complex system deployment projects in a team environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of security trends and best practices.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21>40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposed to high voltage electricity, noise >80dB TWA, confined spaces, hot temperatures, heavy metals.
