POSITION OVERVIEW

The Audio-Visual Specialist plays a key role in various decision-making capacities related to classroom, office, conference and auditorium audio/visual and multimedia technology.  This position provides classroom and events support with a strong customer service commitment and user satisfaction as the ultimate goal.  This position has two major areas of responsibility:  1) operate, troubleshoot, maintain and repair audio/visual equipment in classrooms and other campus venues to support classrooms and events:  2) support students, faculty and staff in the use of A/V equipment.  This position reports to the Director of Client Services.

Position Status:  This position is a salaried, nonexempt, full-time, 12-month position.

Hours of Work:  This is a full-time, year-round position.  Typical hours are 7:30am to 4:00pm, M-F.  Some weekend and evening work will be required. Westminster is a drug-free, smoke-free campus.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and inventory analog and digital A/V equipment, including but not limited to audio mixers (up to 64 channels), wireless and wired microphones, powered and amplifier-driven speakers, playback and recording devices, projectors, audio and video switchers, and control panels. Specific tasks include meeting with users to assess and plan for events, mixing live audio in various venues (20+ simultaneous channels), assisting presenters in connecting computers and other devices to A/V systems, troubleshooting computer/device configurations, delivering and setting up projectors and portable sound systems in various venues, replacing lamps, resetting lamp timers and cleaning air filters, and replacing broken equipment when needed, including rewiring, reprogramming, and reinstallation of A/V equipment once repaired.
  • Provide technical expertise, consultation, and support for users in the selection and use of A/V equipment and software (including video conferencing, presentation, and sound systems).
  • Perform service calls to provide accurate and timely technical assistance, including researching and testing potential solutions, and clearly communicating these to the user.
  • Provide direct user support by answering phones, responding to user requests sent via email, ticketing system, or in person; visit classrooms and other campus venues to assist users in person when needed.
  • Provide input and feedback to improve service, including collaborating with other A/V team members to create documentation for IT Services staff and end users.
  • Provide backup to client services colleagues when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

High School diploma required; Associate's degree, CTS certification and four years of related experience preferred.   Relevant education or certification may substitute for up to two years of experience.   Experience in education A/V strongly preferred.  Other requirements include:

 

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of analog and digital A/V equipment, including.
  1. multi-channel audio mixing in live event production environments using analog and digital boards (64 channels or more, mixing 20+ simultaneous channels)
  2. wired and wireless analog, digital, and networked microphone systems, including installed and touring/portable systems, for reproduction of vocals, acoustic, electric, and electronic instruments
  3. setup, operation, and takedown of portable/touring audio systems for amplification of speech and vocal and instrumental music
  4. operation and troubleshooting of classroom and event technology including video projectors, sound systems, automation and control systems, and interactive technologies
  5. connection, configuration, and troubleshooting of computer-driven content sources with installed and portable projection, audio, and video systems
  6. production lighting systems, including installation, focus, and control systems connection and operation in both temporary and fixed configurations
  • Familiarity with Dante networked audio systems preferred
  • 2+ years minimum experience with Microsoft and Apple desktops/laptops
  • Advanced knowledge or vendor certification in configuration and operation of Yamaha, BSS, BiAmp, Crown, and Shure professional audio products.
  • Advanced knowledge or vendor certification in configuration and operation of ETC lighting control systems preferred
  • Advanced knowledge or vendor certification in configuration and operation of Epson and Christie projection systems preferred
  • Crestron programmer and DM Technician certifications preferred
  • InfoComm CTS certification preferred
  • Research questions using available information resources including collaboration with fellow team members.
  • Stay current with system information, changes and updates.
  • Excellent communication skills and customer service orientation, with the ability to work as a flexible, collaborative, and supportive team member, while excelling in a fast-paced service environment.
  • Intellectual flexibility, technical curiosity and a sense of humor, including the ability to learn independently.
  • Must be able to work evening and weekend hours as needed to support events.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out; and smell. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Required travel is primarily associated with conferences and professional development opportunities.
