San Diego State University (SDSU) Library & Information Access seeks applications and nominations of dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented candidates for the position of Online Learning Librarian. The Online Learning Librarian provides leadership on the investigation into, design of, experimentation with and delivery of accessible online learning objects, materials and tools that enhance information literacy skills in support of student success. The successful candidate will work closely with librarians in Reference, Instruction and Outreach to develop, deliver and assess a comprehensive instructional services program. The SDSU Library is in an exciting period of growth and this is a newly-created position. This is a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Associate Librarian.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging trends, best practices, and pedagogical principles in instructional technology and online learning;
  • Plan, design, implement, and maintain a broad range of teaching and learning objects including but not limited to web-based tutorials, instructional videos, research guides, and websites;
  • Provide leadership for the assessment of online instruction practices and participate in broader assessment efforts regarding student learning;
  • Facilitate the integration and use of library instruction materials in learning management systems and other online environments while ensuring compliance with ADA guidelines and higher education standards;
  • Investigate, manage, and instruct other San Diego State University librarians in the effective use of technologies in face-to-face and online classroom environments;
  • Work closely with the Undergraduate Success Librarian, Electronic Resources Librarian, and librarians in the Reference, Instruction and Outreach area to ensure timely promotion and tutorial production for resources as they align with information literacy instruction;
  • Manage chat reference service;
  • Participate in shared general undergraduate information literacy instruction and reference;
  • Serve as a subject liaison for select academic departments, which includes subject-specific instruction, reference, research support, outreach and collection development;
  • Liaise with other campus offices supporting instruction and learning initiatives, especially Instructional Technology Services and the Center for Teaching and Learning;
  • Participate in professional development activities to demonstrate a continuous and meritorious record of scholarly contributions and achievements in the profession;
  • Participate in the shared governance of San Diego State University by serving on campus, library and California State University system-wide committees; and,
  • Other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent foreign degree;
  • A minimum of three years’ experience designing and delivering information literacy instruction in a higher education environment;
  • Familiarity with information literacy standards including the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, and with curriculum development in alignment with standards and best practices;
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in pedagogy for e-learning and distance education;
  • Strong working knowledge of instructional technologies, including major presentation tools and emerging technologies, that can support classroom and remote or asynchronous instruction;
  • Demonstrated ability to independently and collaboratively design and deliver instructional content across diverse learning environments, which may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online classrooms;
  • Experience developing and assessing student learning outcomes using tools such as rubrics and curriculum maps; 
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills with a willingness to experiment with new methods and technologies;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, particularly the ability to explain complex concepts to a wide variety of users in individual and group settings;
  • Experience working with faculty, researchers, staff, and students;
  • Experience working with multicultural and international student groups;
  • Competence and sensitivity in working at a university in which students, faculty, and staff are broadly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion;
  • Ability to work as a team player in maintaining harmonious, cooperative working relationships with administrators, staff, and faculty;
  • Active involvement in professional development activities with a record of scholarly contributions and achievements in the profession; and,
  • Potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion based on library service, professional growth, and service to the University and community.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working as a subject liaison to an academic department;
  • Experience with collection development;
  • Familiarity with Open Educational Resources;
  • Familiarity with chat reference services, such as Questionpoint;
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards for ADA compliance for online learning.

This is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure track faculty position. Tenure is dependent upon continuing library service effectiveness, professional growth and development, and service to the University and community. Salary commensurate with experience and based on CSU Salary Schedule.
