This lead specialist is responsible for teaching in a fully equipped Design Lab, working collaboratively with Homeroom & Specialist Teachers to implement an academically strong, child-centered and differentiated Design and Innovation curriculum. Position Description:
• Create and teach required Design classes to 6-8th Middle School students as part of our integrated IB Middle Year Programme (MYP).
• Collaborate in the design and teaching of elective/supporting Design classes to Lower School students in K-5th grades as part of our integrated IB Primary Year Programme (PYP).
• Lead the development and implementation of our unique Design and Innovation program focused on growing four major areas: electronics, design engineering, coding & programming, and robotics.
• Run our Design Lab – a space that is rapidly evolving to meet the needs of our dynamic programming and student/teacher interests. Our lab is equipped with a wide range of tools and materials ranging from sewing machines, wood working tools, a GlowForge laser cutter/engraver, and simple electronics.
• Help students build a deep and lasting understanding of the design process through direct hands-on experience and investigations. Our design curriculum is designed to build foundational safety and building skills and foster an early love for the processes of inquiry and discovery.
• Facilitates the social and emotional development of the students. Key components of our daily life include: morning meetings, class meetings, service and leadership opportunities, class and school-wide agreements, rituals, routines, and all-school gatherings.
• Coordinate/run Middle School LAB electives and Friday Exploration options. There are additional optional opportunities to expand programming to afterschool classes and summer camps (for additional pay).
• Maintains solid frequent and effective communication with home, colleagues and administration.
• Participates in staff meetings, retreats, and on various committees.
• Supports the overall mission of Mackintosh Academy.
