The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has as its mission the accumulation, generation, and dissemination of knowledge in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Central to the mission is a high quality research and educational program that benefits our students, the State of North Carolina, the nation and the world. The Department acts as a focal point for development, growth and entrepreneurship.

The ECE Information Technology group (WolfTech IT) provides technology leadership and support to the department and is responsible for technology planning, budgeting, hardware, software and service procurement, and overall technology oversight. Beyond the direct support of the department, we spearhead major campus services (many of which are created by our Application Developers) depended on by units throughout NC State University, including campus Digital Signage, Identity Management, Student LifeCycle, Inventory, and HR solutions.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is seeking a talented web application developer to carry out all programming efforts required to create and maintain departmental PHP/MySQL based applications. This position will focus on applications related to departmental inventory systems and identity management.

This position designs, develops, and manages custom PHP applications, integration with campus enterprise systems and vendor APIs, and works directly with end-users — graduate students, faculty, and staff – to support the use of these web applications.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Assist with the training and tasking of student programmers as necessary.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree with nine credit hours in programming and one year of experience in business application consulting or development; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Departmental Required Skills

Understanding of full stack PHP application development (backend and frontend programming)

Understanding of the JQuery Javascript Library

Experience with frontend technologies, including HTML5, CSS3, Javascript and building user interfaces, particularly Bootstrap

Experience with responsive or adaptive web design

Understanding of Section 508 and ADA compliance when working on graphical user interfaces

Understanding of RESTful API and data formats (JSON and/or XML)

MySQL expertise; strong database optimization and normalization skills desired.

Experience with debugging tools (Chrome Debugging Tools, Firefox ’s Firebug)

Proficient understanding of code versioning tools (GitHub Enterprise preferred)

Excellent written communication skills, including technical and end-user documentation

Excellent verbal skills, including presentation of technical material to nontechnical end users

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Experience with Laravel framework

At least two years of professional experience building PHP applications
