Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to Belfer Center Director and Belfer Professor of Technology and Global Affairs, the Director is responsible for overall programmatic and financial management of the Technology & Public Purpose Project - the newest non-partisan research project housed at Harvard University's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and directed by former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter.

The project's objective is to address the major challenge of the time: steering the rapid technology-driven change - whether in digital, jobs and training, or biotech - in directions that serve net, long-term public good. It will do so in three ways: (1) formulating practical, analytically-driven solutions to the dilemmas arising from disruptive technological change; (2) convening tech leaders, public officials, and leading thinkers to put these solutions to practice; and (3) training and inspiring a new generation of technologists to make public purpose part of their life's work. The aim is to enable the innovators themselves to design solutions to dilemmas posed to society by technological change, in the conviction that these solutions will be better than if devised by legislators, lawyers, regulators, and politicians without deep technical insight.

To meet this objective, the project - still in the start-up phase - seeks a talented individual to serve as Director. The individual chosen should be a self-starter who is passionate about the mission with a proven track-record taking ideas into actionable programs. This individual needs to be a great communicator and have at least 5 years of experience, ideally with technology/private sector expertise or government experience in an area related to the project.

The Director will work with senior faculty member and other project principals and staff to develop, plan, and execute initiatives designed to explore role of innovation and technology in addressing challenges in the U.S. and across the globe. Internally, the Director will work closely with Harvard faculty, fellows and staff. Externally, the Director will collaborate with CEOs, many from places like Silicon Valley, Austin, Seattle and Boston; former government officials, many from the Pentagon; and senior technologists, and entrepreneurs.
