The Disability Specialist and Technology Support Trainer serves as an access specialist and is responsible for managing a caseload of students with disabilities to ensure timely receipt of academic accommodations. The Disability Specialist and Technology Support Trainer will provide training to eligible students, faculty and staff in the use of assistive technology, and will supervise classroom aides. This position reports to the Associate Director, Student Access Services.

Unit Description: The Academic Achievement and Access Center (AAAC) enhances the quality of life of students at the University of Kansas by supporting the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. The AAAC is a department in Undergraduate Studies. Within the AAAC, Student Access Services (SAS) is responsible for coordinating accommodations for KU students with documented disabilities.

The person in this position is responsible for knowledge of and compliance with Board of Regents, University policies and NCAA rules and regulations regarding the day to day job related activities applicable to the position that could involve contact with student athletes.

Job Description

40% Consult with eligible students and faculty regarding academic accommodations and facilitating access. Support students in the use of assistive technology to access accessible formats. Train students and staff in the use of assistive technologies available to students on campus.

30% Review documentation submitted by diagnostic professionals regarding prospective and currently enrolled students with disabilities to determine reasonable accommodations.*

10% Provide executive functioning coaching to students with disabilities that can include goal setting, organizational/time management skills, and study strategies.

10% Supervise classroom aides and monitor their work with students using assistive technology.

10% Other duties as assigned (which may include exam proctoring).

*This position requires some evening and weekend work, especially during heavy student service/support usage.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. Three years’ experience working with students with disabilities.
  3. Two years of experience using MS Office software.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree in Special Education, Education, Psychology, Social Welfare, Rehabilitation Counseling, Higher Education, Student Development or a related field and three years of experience or any combination of Bachelor’s Degree and five years’ experience working with college students with disabilities. 
  2. Two years of experience providing academic accommodations for college students with Disabilities.
  3. Work experience using and demonstrating assistive technology with students and staff.
  4. Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated through application materials and in-person interview.
  5. Experience working with diverse students as demonstrated by cover letter and resume.
