This position is in the Department of Information Technology at the Brown School of Social Work.  This position is for the Danforth Campus.

Essential Functions

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Information Technology will function as the chief information technology officer of the Brown School and will set the strategic technology direction for the School, assuming comprehensive responsibility for research, academic and administrative IT activities.  Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Administration, the Director of IT will assess the IT needs of the administration, faculty, staff and students, and develop IT department staff, structure, services, processes and systems that are efficiently aligned to meet the goals and objectives outlined in the Brown School’s strategic plan and balanced scorecard.  The Director of IT will provide significant leadership as the School implements a major expansion of programs and facilities. The Director of IT also will work closely with the Associate Dean for External Affairs to implement web-based technologies and related communications tools directed at internal and external constituents.  The Director of IT will represent Brown School requirements in various IT strategy, project, and service governance committees and will ensure the Brown School is leveraging central IT services when appropriate. This position will have 80% effort as the Director of Information Technology and 20% will be spent working with the Washington University Information Technology under the supervision of the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. IT Leadership:
  • Develop a vision and strategic plan to support the research, academic and administrative technology needs of the School.  Establish a supporting operational technology plan that encompasses the School’s short- and long-term objectives.   Assess IT needs of administration, faculty, staff and students and recommend technology solutions that will improve productivity and enhance efficiency.  Use strategic benchmarking with peer institutions and the private sector to cost-effectively improve IT systems, structure and services.  Support and promote collaboration and communication among other units of the School (library, student services, admissions, communications, business office, service center, career services, field education, research administration and others) using innovative technology solutions.  Develop and foster a productive partnership with Washington University’s central Information Technology Department and build key alliances with IT colleagues from other Washington University schools to implement a framework for developing and leveraging common and shared applications.   Maintain current knowledge of IT trends in higher education by participating in national professional events and organizations.
  1. IT Resource Development and Management:
  • Develop and oversee budget and resource management of technology and information services.  Determine staff, facilities and resources needed to advance the School’s IT goals.  Evaluate functional personnel needs and develop effective staff organizational structure. Oversee the recruitment and development of IT staff to ensure that the School has a quality workforce with technical skills and competencies to accomplish its mission.  Recommend professional development opportunities and provide strategic mentoring to IT staff.  Conduct cost-benefit analyses to determine strategic outsourcing of IT services and operations while achieving the greatest possible return on IT investments.  Assess IT security, legal and liability factors relevant to higher education and develop risk management strategies, including an IT security plan and IT disaster preparedness plan.  Establish criteria/metric and processes for measuring and assessing performance and quality of IT services, systems and projects.
  1. IT Project Management:
  • Establish principles and framework for accepting, prioritizing, delegating, executing and tracking IT projects and requests to completion.  Develop project plans, including resource (hardware and software) needs, and work closely with Associate Dean for Administration and the executive management staff to determine project priorities.
  1. IT Training and Service Delivery:
  • Promote and implement the integration of technology in all aspects of the Brown School mission, including our professional education programs, teaching, international work, etc.  Develop innovative methods for educating administrators, faculty and students about available technologies that can improve productivity, efficiency and quality.  Establish new approaches for empowering end users and for linking higher education systems (contact management, course management) with business functionality to improve efficiency.
  1. Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Administration.

Required Qualifications

 
  • Bachelor of Science Degree, five to seven years of experience in information services leadership roles. 
  • Working knowledge of mainstream application development languages, operating systems, networking technology, and databases. 
  • Supervision of network, desktop, and software development personnel is required. 
  • Ideal candidate will possess broad technical knowledge of information systems and a deep conceptual understanding of how technology can be strategically integrated in a higher education environment to advance research, education and service.

Preferred Qualifications

 
  • Master’s Degree with strong IT management, project management, planning, budgeting and staff development skills.
  • Strong organizational, and communication skills; and a commitment to service and collaborative problem solving.   
  • Ability to work with research groups in a school that emphasizes research excellence. 
  • Knowledge of course management applications (Telesis, Blackboard, Canvas), content management and collaboration applications, specifically Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS), helpdesk applications, and relationship and contact management applications (Intelliworks, Symplicity).
  • Candidate should have demonstrated leadership skills, teambuilding skills, and demonstrated ability to develop and implement a strategic plan.

Salary Range

 

The hiring range for this position is $71,058 - $94,146 annually or commensurate with experience.
