Design Technology Technician
Reports to: Assistant Head, Innovation Development and Technology
Summary of Position:
The Design Technology Technician is responsible for integrating current and emergent design technology tools that align with our Signature of a BSS Girl (SBSSG) attributes and our Culture of Powerful Learning (CoPL) best teaching practices, within all areas of our JK-12 curriculum. As part of a team, this position supports and builds capacity on the use of design technology with faculty and students, including teacher support, integration, skills development, appropriate and safe use as well as risk-taking. This position will participate as a team member to continue to move the school forward as leading edge in technology.
Specific Accountabilities Include:

Collaborates and consults with teachers in use and integration of Design Technology (DT) tools. Able to apply design thinking into projects and learning

Supports teachers and students in the use of DT tools such as managing 3D printing, laser cutting and other technical work that can be done outside of in-class time

Reviews, updates and establishes new safety procedures that orientate both faculty and students on important practices as they use the tools and the spaces

Keeps work areas clean, neat and organized

Deepens teacher understanding and use of DT for learning by delivering planned or just-in-time skills development. As part of a larger DT and Technology Integration team, develops and delivers skills-based professional learning

Maintains and services equipment, including but not limited to, licenses, software and hardware servicing and updates

Manages and monitors equipment and materials inventory. Proactively places orders, receives and restocks as necessary and provides required paperwork to Accounts Payable Administrator

As part of a team, participates in research, testing and pilots on current and/or emergent tools as well as best use practices relevant to the BSS learning environment and strategic directions. Participates in the selection process of new technologies

Works as part of a team to open and close the school – including, but not limited to, the setup of design technology spaces for school opening and any associated training

Skills, Experience and Attributes Include:

Strong experience with Design Technology tools such as 3D printing, laser cutting, routing tools, robotics, coding, makerspace tools.

Experience integrating technology within a JK-12 curriculum

Understanding of the SAMR model

Understanding of Design Thinking

Strong working knowledge and experience with the Apple platform including software and hardware

Strong verbal and written communication as well as interpersonal skills

Good research and writing skills

Currency with respect to emergent Design Technology tools

Proven team-building and teamwork skills encompassing diverse work groups

Troubleshooting/problem-solving skills
-
Strong organizational and multitasking skills

Interested in and able to work in a complex and changing environment

Flexibility and a sense of humour
